George
Harrison Biography
(1943 - 2001)
The son of a bus driver, George Harrison was born in the Hunts
Cross area of Liverpool on 25 February 1943.
Aged 14, he bought a £3 guitar, music replaced his academic
studies and, a year later, his mastery of more than the mere basic
chords brought about his induction into The Quarrymen, a group which
featured John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
After learning their trade and honing their musical abilities in
British
clubs and on Hamburg's notorious Reeperbahn the group, now known
as The Beatles, settled their line-up in 1962 with the addition
of a drummer,
Ringo Starr.
Aged just 26 when The Beatles finally split, George Harrison threw
himself
into meditation and gardening, transforming the vast grounds of
his house, Friar's Park in Henley on Thames.
George Harrison was a long time friend of the Hare Krsna movement,
often calling himself a 'plainclothes devotee.' Interested in Eastern
philosophy and music.
His critically-acclaimed triple album, All Things Must Pass, featured
the
hit single 'My Sweet Lord'. He included the chanting of Hare Krsna
in this famous recording, which introduced the Holy Name to millions.
He met Srila Prabhupada on numerous occasions, and visited ISKCON
temples around the world. He is also recognized for donating Bhaktivedanta
Manor (U.K) to the Krsna Consciousness Movement for use as a temple
and ashram. He also helped to publish Srila Prabhupada's books,
and wrote the introduction for the "Krsna" book.
Many devotees today are reflecting on the contributions of George
Harrison to ISKCON, and remembering with appreciation his efforts
to introduce Krsna's names around the world. For many devotees,
George was personally responsible for their introduction and interest
in Krsna Consciousness, and we therefore owe him our collective
thanks.
